History

SCANUL-ECS is an organization of national and university libraries in the Eastern, Central, and Southern African region. It was established in 1994 in Malawi. Constitution

SCANUL-ECS AIMS AND OBJECTIVES

SCANUL-ECS was established to promote and enhance cooperation among national and university libraries in this region. The aims and objectives are spelt out in the constitution.

CONFERENCES

Representatives from member national and university libraries hold a conference every 2 years to discuss pertinent issues. The conference precedes the Standing Conference of Eastern, Central, and Southern Africa Librarians (SCECSAL). The previous SCANUL-ECS conferences were held in Malawi (1994), Lesotho (1996), Kenya (1998), Namibia (2000), South Africa (2002), Uganda (2004). The next conference will be held in Dar es Salaam, Tanzania in 2006.

  • 1994 Preparations for the establishment of SCANUL-ECS
  • 1996 Challenges for African university and national libraries in the 21st century; the impact of the economy, structural adjustment programmes and information technology.
  • 1998 Survival in a Changing Evironment
  • 2000 Sustainable Funding of African National and University Libraries
  • 2002 Resource Sharing and Cooperation in National and University Libraries
  • 2004 Information Literacy: A continuing Challenge for National and University Libraries
  • 2006 The theme is still in the process of formulation.

SCANUL-ECS COMMITTEE

Executive Committee Members are elected every two years during the SCANUL-ECS Business meetings. These are charged with the duty of steering the organization forward and also to organize the next conference. They include the Chairperson, Deputy Chairperson, Secretary, Treasurer, Editor
